THE SYDNEY GREEN GRID

There are significant health and wellbeing benefits associated with readily accessible, high quality, well-designed open space. Government Architect of NSW has identified a network of high-quality green space that connects town centres, public transport hubs, and major residential areas. Known as the Sydney Green Grid, it is an essential part of the Greater Sydney Region and District Plans. Put simply – the Green Grid is to promote sustainable development while maximising quality of life and wellbeing.
As population in the city increases, people face the challenge of maintaining a liveable environment. We want an increase in green public spaces that allow for dedicated pedestrian zones and areas that allow our senses to feel we are not living in a commercial-centred built environment.
The Sydney Green Grid provides a network of open spaces that will keep the city cool, encourage healthy living, enhance biodiversity and maintain sound ecology.
Squares and plazas offer important recreation and open space opportunities in high density areas. They provide a sense of visual character.
Surrounded by heritage significance in the case of Barrack Street, they also offer a sense of place and are to be conserved for the benefit of current and future generations.
